From here, it would spread across the Old World. The role cacao would play in Spanish culture was reckoned with through art. For example, in "Cuestión moral: si el chocolate quebranta el ayuno eclesiástico" the fears and speculations of chocolate were explored and questions of whether it was a morally acceptable substance or something impure and evil were brought to a broader audience. Furthermore, Spain boasts some of the first works in Europe where cacao becomes an item in the background, simply another part of everyday life. This showcases the enculturation of the substance and illuminates how chocolate became a part of Spanish culture that withstood the test of time.
