  In our interview with University Librarian Stephanie-Davis Kahl, we spoke to her particularly about the COVID-19 Pandemic and the library’s role in student success through this period. She highlighted the fact that since our library had already made a firm investment in digital resources, that workflow transition was smoother than expected. However, the library played a critical role in adjusting students to the online world through instruction sessions, regular emails with students and working tirelessly to provide digital resources needed for academic success.

  The library demonstrated its essential role as a student space by adapting to significant changes and meeting the evolving needs of its users. As lockdown measures eased and students began returning to campus, there was an eagerness to return to the library. The library staff recognized this desire and took extensive measures to create a safe environment. This included significant spatial reorganization, like spreading out furniture to comply with social distancing guidelines, putting up safety signs, and temporarily storing excess seating. The transformation of the third floor into a permanent quiet study area was a thoughtful response to the new patterns of use, as many students attended their online classes from the library, seeking a quiet and focused environment. Students expressed relief and joy at being able to return to the library, showcasing its importance as a place not just for academic work but also for a sense of normalcy and community during times of uncertainty.

  The role of libraries in promoting mental health and well-being also gained new importance. This led to the establishment of the self-care station in Ames too!
  
  When asked about the evolving role of libraries in the post-pandemic period, she emphasized that the library as a versatile, communal space has gained more appreciation among students now. 
  
  “It's a space where students can come and make it their own.”

  Unlike classrooms or offices, the library offers a unique environment where students can claim their own corners, fostering a sense of ownership and belonging. This realization has emphasized the library's importance as a vital part of the campus community, where students can gather, study, and feel at home.
  
  Accessibility and affordability have also gained prominence. the library's role in providing free resources has become even more critical as education costs rise, and by offering services for scanning, printing, etc, they help alleviate financial burdens on students.
